"Technology and innovation in the space of Eco friendly: Reincarnate your space!"

In the recent times, the world at large is following practices that are friendly to nature. The only reason for which being the retaliation and retribution from Mother Nature in form of natural catastrophes, thinning of the ozone layer, biomagnifications, oceanic acidification, global warming and what not; and its subsequent impact on the health of the public as respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, throat inflammation, chest pain, and congestion etc.

Evolution of sustainable development practices:
Today there is a growing need for technological innovations that can achieve the aim of sustainable development across all verticals concerning nature and being Eco-Friendly. Bearing this thought in mind in recent years, the efforts of manufacturing industries to achieve sustainable production have shifted from end-of-pipe solutions to a focus on product lifecycles and integrated environmental strategies and management systems. Therefore, there evolved a need for creation, development and innovation of closed-loop, circular production systems, and adoption of new business models.

Radical steps to seek Eco-innovation:
Eco- innovation or eco- friendly innovation aims to develop technological practices that are created basis keeping sustainable development in mind. It calls for industry and policy makers to work more positively towards radical and systematic development of new technology, expertise, equipment and machinery that are eco- friendly in nature. Many companies have started to use eco-innovation or similar terms to describe their contributions to sustainable development.

Key Aspects to develop eco innovation:
The new eco-friendly inventions compete with, and sometimes surpass, their conventional counterparts. Eco-Innovation is any form of innovation resulting in or aiming at significant and demonstrable progress towards the goal of sustainable development, through reducing impacts on the environment, enhancing resilience to environmental pressures, or achieving a more efficient and responsible use of natural resources. Hence the environmental policy and legislation should be such that promotes eco- innovation.
Other key aspect in developing eco-innovation is the collaboration and coming together of international forces to participate, support an contribute in this cause, mobilising financial instruments and support services for SMEs; and supporting the development of emerging skills and jobs and related training programmes to match labour market needs to develop eco innovation.

Types of Renewable Energy

There are two types of energy resources found in Nature, Renewable and Non- Renewable.  As there name suggests non renewable are fossil fuels which cannot be replenished or re-used.
Whereas on the other hand renewable sources of energy are those which can be replenished such as wind and solar energy—and will never run out.
Discussed below are the renewable sources of energy

Solar

Most renewable energy comes either directly or indirectly from the sun. Sunlight directly or indirectly can be used for the purpose of heating and lighting homes. Can also be used for generating electricity, and for hot water heating, solar cooling, and a variety of commercial and industrial uses.

Wind

It is actually the sun that derives the winds as well, the energy is produced and harnessed with the help of the wind. whose energy is captured with wind turbines. The Earth's rotation also contributes to the winds, particularly through the Coriolis effect.

Biomass

The plants needs several essential component to grow on earth. Sunlight and water remains a crucial for the same. The organic matter that makes up those plants is known as biomass. Biomass can be used to produce electricity, transportation fuels, or chemicals. The use of biomass for any of these purposes is called biomass energy.

Hydrogen

Hydrogen is a crucial component that helps in generating living condition on this planet. It is found in many organic compounds, as well as water. It's the most abundant element on the Earth. But it doesn't occur naturally as a gas. It's always combined with other elements, such as with oxygen to make water. Once separated from another element, hydrogen can be burned as a fuel or converted into electricity. Because energy is always needed to produce hydrogen, hydrogen is not in itself an energy source, but rather a way to store and transport energy, so it is often referred to as an energy carrier.

Other than these resources we also have Geothermal, Ocean, Hydropower

Energy Saving Tips to Use Throughout the Year

The decreasing foot prints of fossil fuel is one of the greatest concern of our times. The energy producing resources   namely, non renewable have been exhausted at an constant rate resulting in this crunch. On the other hand the burning of these fuels causes several reactions out of which production of heat is the most common. This heat Conjures up a phenomenon called global warming, that has endangered the Glaciers and other frozen areas and bodies resulting in the rise of water level of the existing water bodies and endangering species  and hence disturbing the ecological model of the nature.

But there are a few ways we can tackle the challenges of these hideous problems. Below given are few energy saving tips:-

·         Use fans instead of air conditioner all the time.
·       Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent ones. They last up to ten times longer and can use a quarter of the energy.
·       Plug electronics into a power strip and flip off the switch when the gadgets aren’t in use. (make sure this won’t mess up clocks and recordings.)
·        Always turn off all your computer components that we usually forget or lazily don’t. Also set the computer's sleep mode for when the computer is idle for just a little while. By doing these two simple acts, you will use about 85% less energy each day.
·         Simply switch off the light whenever not in need or you leave the room.
·         Set the thermostat to no lower than 78°F in the summer and no higher than 68°F in the winter.
·         You can use natural light by placing  your desk next to a window instead of a lamp.
·         Close your curtains to keep out daytime summer heat or keep in nighttime winter warmth.
·         Turn off the TV or video game console and play outside.
·         Always turn off your cars and other vehicles when waiting for  that light to turn green.
·         Ride a bike or walk instead of using the car.
·        Carpool

These are simple and very effective tips to preserve and save out beautiful planet.

LED :Empowering us to make a Difference!

The evolutions in the energy sector is inevitable and much needed, with limited non-renewable energy resources around, it becomes rather futile to question the development this this sector. The researchers are looking forward to create more resilient and dependable fuel as well as alternatives that could save us energy. A bright idea in the same bid was the progression of: light bulbs that use 75% to 80% less energy. Exhausting much lesser amount of energy as well as, resulting in reduction of heat produced than its outdated substitutes.
Compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL) and light-emitting diode bulbs (LED) are quickly becoming the new norm. These newer bulbs have a bright future as they are made with an aim of systematic reduction of inefficient incandescent bulbs.
The spiral-shaped bulbs known as CFL has been an alternative to incandescent bulbs. But the leading LED bulbs are most appreciated and longest lasting of them all.

It was recently that many renowned companies announced new LED products into the market, keeping the  perspective of the energy efficient and demand in preview these have announced  LED replacement lamps (40W equiv) for less than $10. This is a huge price inflection point that will help consumers adopt the technology.

But what is that makes LED a better replacement of CFL's other than energy and indirectly capital saving?
Not many out there knows that Not only is the performance of CFL  worse than LED lamps, they also contain mercury. Which is toxic in nature and could really be harmful. More explained in the infographic:

LED can save you tomato cost!

We hardly pay any attention to the issue of deteriorating food quality unless we find that musty smell or taste in our plate. The average tomato in subcontinents is shipped almost 1,500 miles from warmer climates where they’re grown to cooler climates that cannot produce the fruit cost-effectively in the winter. This journey is quite costly — tomatoes in general are picked green and ripen during shipping, needless to explaining the time duration deteriorates not just the quality but the flavor. The lengthy shipping distance also adds to the industry’s carbon footprint and above all this process of increases the real cost of the food in folds.

Professor of horticulture from Purdue University says “It makes it really hard for the greenhouse industry to grow tomatoes well in the off-season,” and researchers and his team mates are  trying to change that and make it affordable.

Energy costs drive up prices for producers who might want to grow tomatoes in greenhouses in states that have winters inhospitable to growing food. Greenhouses must be heated, and shorter, overcast days require costly lighting.

It was an experiment that resulted in a a great break through. Conducted with light-emitting diodes, which are cooler and require far less energy than traditional high-pressure sodium lamps used in greenhouses. Using the same yield—size and number of fruit—with high-pressure sodium lamps and LED towers, but the LEDs used about 25 percent of the energy of traditional lamps.

The method could have other advantages as well, because cooler LEDs can be placed much closer and along the sides of plants, lighting not only the top, but also the understory.
“The leaves are photosynthesizing on the lower parts of the plants, and that may be helping with the plant’s energy,” explained a researcher. The researchers are able to get it nearer to the plants without actually harming or scorching them because even the high intensity of the LEDs is not hot like a high-pressure sodium lamp.

The heat from high-pressure sodium lamps account for about 15 to 25 percent of the heat needed to warm greenhouses, but that's still inefficient and also not cost effective at all to heat the green house.

The goal of the research is to reduce prices to the point where local growers could compete with the prices of tomatoes that are shipped from faraway places. Local tomatoes would be harvested vine ripe, would taste better, and would boost local economies.

Make Your Home Greener in 5 Simple Ways!

It is rightly said, ‘charity begins at home.’ When we talk of a pollution-free global environment, we must know that only by taking up this responsibility on our own shoulders can we bring about a positive change in the world. Here is how you can start a ‘Go Green’ drive at your doorstep:

     1.  Go for green appliances at home- Did you know that your refrigerator takes away around 18% of your home’s total energy bill? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, replacing home appliances that are more than 10 years old with the ones bearing an ‘energy star’ logo is highly advisable. 10 homes using energy efficient appliances is equivalent to planting 1.7 million new acres of tree!

     2.  Keep a regular check on the temperatures:  heating and cooling at home can take away more than half of the total energy consumption. Turn down the thermostat in cold weather and keep it higher in warm weather. Consider buying a new furnace which is believed to be 25% more efficient than they were in the early years. Using ceiling fans instead of air- conditioners is also highly recommended the environment protection agencies.

     3. Each drop of water counts: Save water for a clean and safe environment. Energy loss is directly proportional to water shortage. Put an aerator on all household faucets and cut your annual water consumption by 50%.

     4. Avoid paper: Recycled paper products are best to buy for maintaining the ecological balance. Saving paper can save tress and keep the atmosphere fresh and healthy.

     5. Use energy-efficient lighting- Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFLs) use 66% less energy than a standard incandescent bulb and last up to 10 times longer. Replace the high power consuming bulbs at your home with green CFLs.
